What is the end game for McConnell?
Obviously its blocking infrastructure/voting rights/having a functional government.
But I think there is another one.
He has likely calculated that the 2024 map is pretty favorable and its more likely than not Rs have the Senate back by then if not 2 years earlier. At this point, he is probably thinking forcing an end to the filibuster helps his cause. Dems end filibuster in 2021. Sure we get some infrastructure spending (that most Rs want to bring home the bacon on). But in ‘22 if the get back the Senate, they get 2 years to investigate and obstruct Biden Admin, block all judicial nominees (including Breyer replacement).
If they play their cards right, Dems end the filibuster this year and in 2024 President DeSantis replaces the vacant Breyer seat, Alito and Thomas, and we are now 7-2, locked out of the Supreme Court for another generation without reform.
Should Dems end the filibuster? Yes.
But, only if doing so gets them voting rights and the big infrastructure package.
