NY Same-Sex Marriage

Thu Jun 01, 2006 at 05:53:30 AM PDT

I just watched the oral argument before the New York Court of Appeals (High Court) on same-sex marriage in NYS and I'm pretty optimistic about the court doing the right thing.

I also just posted a similar comment over at Americablog, but I thought I'd come back home to Kos and see what all y'all are thinking.

NYT a Ho For Bloomberg: Gay Pride In New York

Mon Jun 27, 2005 at 04:28:19 AM PDT

I returned from yesterday's Gay Pride parade all sunburnt, exhausted, and happy.  And not necessarily in that order.

Hundreds of thousands of people--some of them even marching down 5th Avenue--came out to celebrate Pride on a truly gorgeous New York afternoon.
That's why when checking the media today to see how it was reported, I'm not so much surprised as enraged at our hometown "paper of record."

More on the flipside (heh).

Gays Heckle Bloomberg

Sun Feb 06, 2005 at 08:23:44 AM PDT

I was a little confused and, frankly, scared when I read the news yesterday that Mayor Bloomberg requested an expedited appeal directly to the state's highest court of the decision on Friday in Manhattan that gays must be allowed to marry.   He announced the City's intention to appeal in a sidewalk press conference in Chinatown yesterday (it's Chinese New Year, almost).

This morning I wake up to find that Bloomberg was a guest speaker at the Human Rights Campaign dinner at the Waldorf Astoria last night.  He also spoke at the Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee's winter dance in Astoria last night.

He was heckled at both events.

More after the jump.

NY: Same-Sex Couples Must Be Allowed To Marry

Fri Feb 04, 2005 at 11:38:12 AM PDT

[Promoted from the diaries by DavidNYC. As Dan notes, there were a couple of diarists who broke the news first, so props to those eagle-eyed Kossacks. But I appreciate Dan's legal analysis, so his gets the nod. Edited very slightly.]

Update [2005-2-4 15:24:47 by DavidNYC]: [I should have made this clear at the outset: As someone in the comments pointed out, the New York State Supreme Court is actually the lowest - ie, trial-level - court in the state. This decision is appealable and I presume will be appealed. NY's highest court is called the Court of Appeals.]

There have been a couple of diaries about the historic (and beautifully written) decision from NY State Supreme Court in New York County (hey, that's Manhattan!). I thought I would add my two cents as a lawyer.

After reading the court's decision, I'm totally happy.

You can find Lambda Legal's press release here.

They held a press conference at 1:30, but I'm stuck in my cubicle and can't watch.  Did anyone see it?

You can find a copy of the decision here (PDF).

Brooks: Values Frame Too Hot to Handle

Sat Nov 06, 2004 at 06:43:40 AM PDT

Imagine that your party used every means possible to win an election, including telegraphing intolerance and hate through a network of evangelical churches.  OK.  Now pretend that the media picks up the story and runs with it.  The conventional wisdom becomes "values provided the margin of victory."  Friend and foe alike now believe this to be true.

I know, I know.  Suspend disbelief long enough to imagine that it must be all about the "values."

This CW provides all the ingredients for a successful Republican civil war.  My evidence?  Today's New York Times carries conflicting news and Op-Ed pieces that beautifully frame the battle.

In order to get re-elected, Rove and the evangelicals bit off more than the party can handle and are now trying to distance themselves from the "values" explanation.  The problem is, I worry that the country won't survive the right-wing onslaught, either.

More below the fold.

Krugman on Franken Now

Tue Aug 03, 2004 at 10:10:20 AM PDT

So far, Paul is talking about the media, the lack of difference between CNN and Fox and the pundits.

"Only Republicans can be patriots."

Anybody want to listen along?

Democratic War Room????

Tue Jul 27, 2004 at 04:53:00 PM PDT

I snuck out of work early tonight to catch some of the network news coverage of the convention.  I was amazed to hear Tom Brokaw file a report about the Democratic War Room.  That's right, the Dem War Room.

I'm so relieved that there is such a thing.

Some of you (yes you, Marisacat) have picked up on my frustration that, according to Randi Rhodes, there is no plan by Democratic Party to have a war room at the GOP convention.  As you may already know, Kathryn Seelye did a fine report from inside the GOP war room in the NY Times yesterday.

NYC to GOP Convention Protesters: F* YOURSELF

Fri Jun 25, 2004 at 09:54:56 AM PDT

I knew it was coming, and we're beginning to see how this will play out.  The "Protest" zones will render any protest invisible to conventioneers and, more importantly, to the media.  NY1 (an excellent local cable news station) is reporting:

Just Saw The Hunting of the President

Sat Jun 19, 2004 at 12:21:40 PM PDT

I decided to go early to avoid the crowds.  A couple of friends were interested in going, but I didn't want to wait around for them.  So, on a beautiful sunny New York afternoon, I went to see the Hunting of the President alone.

What did I think?

Kerry Blog: Statement on the Death of RR

Sat Jun 05, 2004 at 03:57:36 PM PDT

I have to hand it to John Kerry.  The guy is a class act.  Here's a copy of the statement released by John Kerry this afternoon on the John Kerry blog:

"Ronald Reagan's love of country was infectious. Even when he was breaking Democrats' hearts, he did so with a smile and in the spirit of honest and open debate. Despite the disagreements, he lived by that noble ideal that at 5pm we weren't Democrats or Republicans, we were Americans and friends. President Reagan and Tip O'Neill fought hard and honorably on many issues, and sat down together to happily swap jokes and the stories of their lives. The differences were real, but because of the way President Reagan led, he taught us that there is a big difference between strong beliefs and bitter partisanship.

"He was the voice of America in good times and in grief. When we lost the brave astronauts in the Challenger tragedy, he reminded us that, `Nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue.'

"Now, his own journey has ended-a long and storied trip that spanned most of the American century-and shaped one of the greatest victories of freedom. Today in the face of new challenges, his example reminds us that we must move forward with optimism and resolve. He was our oldest president, but he made America young again.

"Our prayers are with his family, and the wife he loved in a way all the world could see. And to the end, she loved him with courage and complete devotion. She helped all of us better understand the cruel disease that took him away before it took his life, and what we must do to prevent and cure it.

"Teresa and I and our family extend our deepest sympathies to Nancy Reagan and the Reagan family. Today, from California to Maine - `from sea to shining sea' - Americans will bow their heads in prayer and gratitude that President Reagan left such an indelible stamp on the nation he loved."

I think this is just about the most eloquent thing one can say about a political opponent at the sad end of a tragic illness.  I have many conflicting emotions about Reagan's death.  For now, I'll let John Kerry's eloquence lead me and join in his sentiments.

Vatican: Prison Abuse Worse than 9/11

Wed May 12, 2004 at 07:05:17 AM PDT

You've gotta hand it to him.  When the Pope criticizes your government's handling of the war as being worse than the justification you lied about to start the war, man have you arrived.

This is the main news headline all across Europe, especially in Germany.  HUGE. Here's der Spiegel (in German only).

I googled it and found the story in Newsday.

CNN doesn't seem to want to cover it, and judging by the amount of play the beheading is getting over in wingerville, the mainstream media won't.  They too busy being outraged at the outrage.  Sigh.  So much horsesh8t to shovel.

Thank God for Newsday.  Below a clip from the story:

Condi Rice: Almost a Millionaire

Fri Apr 30, 2004 at 09:32:09 AM PDT

According to Public Integrity, Condoleezza Rice owns 3,014 shares of Chevron/Texaco stock.  This comes from her position as a member of the Chevron/Texaco Board of Directors, starting in 1991 and lasting until her appointment as National Security Advisor.

According to today's New York Times,

Shares of ChevronTexaco jumped $1.35 to $91.70 on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange.

Using Friday's stock price, Condoleezza Rice owns $276,383.80 of stock in Chevron/Texaco.  If the stock price rose 33 percent in the last quarter, as the Times reports, she earned $92,127.93 during the last 3 months from this stock alone.

If we were wondering why she didn't appear to know anything about Al Quada during her testimony, or why she was smiling as she dissembled, this may be a clue.

Why oh why do we have a government that is built upon such conflicts of interest??

Spain Completes Troop Withdrawal

Tue Apr 27, 2004 at 08:59:56 AM PDT

Not much information out there, according to Google news, but AP is reporting, via the Guardian:

Spain said it has completed the withdrawal of its peacekeeping troops from Iraq.

- British Prime Minister Tony Blair appeared to rule out immediately sending more troops to Iraq despite the withdrawal of Spanish, Honduran and Dominican soldiers. ``The advice that we have now is that we have sufficient troops to do the job,'' he said.

It appears that U.S. forces will fill the void created by the withdrawal of the Spanish troops.

Drudge Swings and Whiffs ... Again

Fri Apr 23, 2004 at 07:09:07 PM PDT

Can there be anything more annoying than Matt Drudge screeching that a website got a breaking news story wrong?

In this case, Drudge's mistake is far worse than anything done by thememoryhole.org because it's plain to see he's just making shit up.

SPACE SHUTTLE DEAD MIXED WITH IRAQ CASUALTIES ON THE INTERNET
Fri Apr 23 2004 16:08:25 ET

WASHINGTON POST, REUTERS, CNN, AP RUN PHOTOS OF SPACE SHUTTLE COFFINS -- AS IRAQ WAR DEAD! ... AFTER INTERNET MIX-UP: Russ Kick of thememoryhole.org filed a Freedom of Information Act requesting 'all photographs showing caskets (or other devices) containing the remains of US military personnel at Dover AFB. This would include, but not be limited to, caskets arriving, caskets departing, and any funerary rites/rituals being performed. The timeframe for these photos is from 01 February 2003 to the present.'

But Kick appears to have assumed all the photos given to him were of the WAR ON TERROR/IRAQ dead!

On Thursday NASA claimed more than 70 photos featured in Kick's war dead -- were photos of Space Shuttle Columbia's crew! The shuttle blew up on 2/1/03....

Matt Drudge: Screeching Hypocrite

Thu Apr 22, 2004 at 08:08:50 AM PDT

I've started watching Drudge to see what the day's talking points would be on tonight's news.  It's a remarkably fruitful exercise.

This morning's screeching headline:  Dude: Where's Your Website:  Michael Moore Out-Sourcing Design, Server to Canada!

Gee, that's funny.  A Republican who doesn't like out-sourcing.  Imagine that!

Correction:  A Republican who isn't smart enough to argue with Michael Moore on the facts doesn't like it when a Democrat is out-sourcing.

OK  That's more like it. [/snark]

Bill vs. Kwame--who is the Apprentice?

Thu Apr 15, 2004 at 06:11:43 PM PDT

There are loads of weighty questions flying around here tonight.  Please excuse me for having an entry on something a bit more ... entertaining.

I know at least some of you are watching the Apprentice tonight.  Anyone care to predict?

As for me, I'm really torn.  If Kwame wins, it's going to be because he takes charge of the team.  If Bill wins, I think it's going to be because he starts letting people help him.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Scripted????? The Wayback Machine

Wed Apr 14, 2004 at 12:44:00 PM PDT

I was just listening to Al Franken interview Walter Cronkite and the first thing Cronkite said was that last night's press conference seemed scripted.  He cited the lack of follow up questions, the similarity of the questions themselves, and the lack of "banter."

Why, if our most experienced journalists believe this might have been scripted, would this not be included in the coverage?  It would, obviously look bad for Bush.  But it seemed to me that this wasn't the first time this had happened.

Gaming Condi

Wed Apr 07, 2004 at 11:01:20 AM PDT

According to available press reports about Condi's testimony tomorrow before the 9/11 commission, we should be in for quite a well-rehearsed and, most importantly, a very on-message treat.

We already know she's not going to apologize.  Duhh.

More importantly, I've witnessed how the giant Wurlitzer/SCLM echo chamber operates in real time for years at this point.  I started to wonder how Condi's going to spin this one out.

It occurred to me, wouldn't it be so fun to start dissembling and spinning Condi's testimony for her NOW...before she starts trying to save her and her bosses asses jobs?

Let's play "Guess where this is going."  It's easy and fun.
